Chapter 11
You reach down. Your hand is steady, warm, possessing an authority that feels godlike. Your fingers wrap around the curve of his chin, your thumb resting against the delicate hollow beneath his lower lip.
You force his head up.
Nathan doesn't resist. He lets you tilt his head back, his neck arched, his chest rising and falling in shallow, shuddering gasps. A tear spills over his lower eyelid, tracing a slow, glistening path through the charcoal smudge on his cheek.
His skin is hot beneath your fingers. The pulse beneath his jaw is racing like a trapped bird beating its wings against a cage.
You lean down, closing the remaining distance between you until your lips are mere millimeters from his ear, your breath hot against his damp skin.
You are going to deliver the final blow. The fatal contradiction that will seal his life in a maximum-security cell for the rest of his days.
"You thought you were a ghost, Nathan," you whisper, your fingers tightening on his jaw, holding him captive in your grip. "You thought if you fooled the sensors, the world would never know. But you forgot the most basic rule of forensics: every contact leaves a trace. The titanium alloy in that carabiner? It’s a proprietary aerospace blend. Only twelve spools of that wire were ever manufactured."
You pause, letting the weight of the universe settle on his shoulders.
"And all twelve," you murmur against his skin, "were purchased six weeks ago by a shell corporation registered to your mother's maiden name. It's over. Your timeline is gone. Your alibi is dead. You're mine."
Nathan lets out a ragged, trembling exhale. His eyes remain shut, the wet lashes sticking together, his entire frame shuddering as if his lungs cannot draw enough oxygen. He seems entirely broken, completely at your mercy, a fallen prodigy awaiting the final stroke of the axe.
You savor it. You let the ecstasy of your triumph fill your chest, intoxicating and pure.
And then—
In the heavy, suffocating silence of the room, the trembling stops.
Nathan's breathing evens out. Instantly. Seamlessly. Like a switch being flipped inside a machine.
The tension drains from his shoulders. The frantic pulse beneath your thumb does not slow, but its rhythm shifts, settling into a cold, steady, rhythmic cadence.
Slowly, deliberately, Nathan opens his eyes.
The tears are still wet on his cheeks, but the helpless terror behind them is completely, terrifyingly gone.
His slate eyes are bone-dry, piercing, and dancing with an amusement so dark and predatory that the blood in your veins instantly turns to slush.
Underneath your fingers, the trembling lips stop shaking.
They part.
And then, slowly, agonizingly, they curve upward into a brilliant, breathtaking, triumphant smile.
"Thank you, Christian," Nathan whispers, his voice smooth as silk, utterly devoid of fear. "You just solved the only flaw I couldn't see."
