Chapter 8
The promise hung in the air like a warm silk blanket, wrapping around her bruised nerves.
“And your uncle?” she asked, typing a string of syntax commands to stabilize the microwave carrier wave. “Silvio? Will he come with us?”
“Silvio is old, Jemma,” Hector said, his voice flat, neutral, devoid of any sentimentality. “His heart is failing. Once the ledger is restored and the family’s assets are secured under my authority, the old man will retire to his estate in Palermo. His war is done. Tonight, the crown passes.”
It made sense. Silvio had been a phantom for the last two years—a frail, reclusive king clinging to his throne while Hector did all the bleeding, all the negotiating, and all the killing. In the brutal meritocracy of the Five Families, a boss who could no longer hold his own captains was a liability. Hector was simply doing what every great heir in history had done: stepping into the vacuum before rival hyenas could tear the kingdom apart.
A sudden, sharp chime pinged from the terminal.
`NODE 03 SYNCHRONIZATION: COMPLETE` `TARGET IDENTIFIED: ROSSI, BERNARDO [CONSIGLIERE]` `LOCATION: 142 HONEY HOLLOW ROAD, BEDFORD, NY` `HARDWARE WALLET: ARMED / MASTER ROOT SEED CAPTURED`
“Got him,” Jemma breathed, a sharp wave of relief washing through her chest. “Bernardo’s master seed is downloaded into our local cache. We have the root key for the entire Delaware corporate trust.”
Hector’s fingers dug into her waist with an intensity that bordered on painful, his knuckles turning white. He stared at the glowing address on the screen as if it were a chalice of gold.
“Squad Charlie is on standby,” Hector said, reaching for his radio. “Dino’s secondary unit is already staged in White Plains. They can be at Honey Hollow Road in eight minutes.”
“Wait,” Jemma said, her brow furrowing as she looked at the downstream network routing. “There’s a fourth partition automatically chaining off Bernardo’s node. Look.”
On the left monitor, a previously hidden sub-routine had unlocked itself.
The Sanctuary Protocol wasn't just a three-tier system—it was a cascade. The moment Bernardo’s node had synchronized with the vault, it had automatically pinged two dormant satellite accounts, revealing the final two human custodians of the Giordano empire.
“The courier and the safe haven,” Jemma whispered, watching the encrypted identity tokens resolve into plain text.
`NODE 04: FALCO, CARMELA [CHIEF COURIER / LIQUIDITY DISPATCH]` `LOCATION: 88 BRUCKNER BOULEVARD, SOUTH BRONX` `ASSET: BEARER BOND REPOSITORY & PHYSICAL TRANSIT TOKENS`
`NODE 05: GIORDANO, SILVIO [DON / THE RETREAT]` `LOCATION: 414 STONE RIDGE ROAD, HUDSON VALLEY` `ASSET: MASTER SOVEREIGN SIGNATURE / FINAL ESCROW RELEASE`
Jemma felt a chill run down her spine, but this time it wasn't fear—it was pure, unadulterated awe at the sheer scale of the architecture.
“All five,” she said, turning her head to look up at Hector, her voice trembling with exhaustion and triumph. “Matteo held the offshore banking routes. Enzo held the domestic cash clearinghouses. Bernardo held the corporate shells. Carmela Falco holds the bearer bonds and the transit routes. And Silvio… your uncle is sitting in the Hudson Valley with the master escrow key.”
She pointed at the terminal’s central status bar, which was rapidly ticking upward: **AIR-GAP ARCHIVE [94%]**.
“All five keys are indexed, Hector,” she said, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Once I transmit these coordinates to your retrieval units, Dino and Nico can round up Carmela and Silvio within forty minutes. We can consolidate every piece of the ledger into a single encrypted drive before the sun comes up. Gianni Cavallaro won’t have a single crumb to pick at.”
Hector stared at the glowing screen.
His face was completely bathed in the green and gold radiance of the monitors, highlighting the sharp, predatory angles of his cheekbones and the cold, unyielding darkness of his eyes. There was no joy in his expression. No relief. Only an absolute, chilling stillness that made the hairs on the back of Jemma’s neck stand on end.
He slowly slid his free hand from her hip up to the side of her neck, his thumb resting against her carotid artery, feeling the rapid, fragile fluttering of her life beneath his palm.
“Carmela and Silvio,” Hector murmured, his voice so soft it was barely audible above the hum of the cooling fans. “The last two threads.”
“I’m formatting the transmission packets now,” Jemma said, reaching back toward the keyboard. “I’m bundling Bernardo’s coordinates for Squad Charlie, and I’ll send Carmela’s warehouse location to Squad Bravo since they’re already near the bridge. We just need to—”
Her words died in her throat.
On the secondary diagnostic display—the one she had ignored after Hector had kissed her—a continuous stream of low-level system background processes was quietly scrolling.
It was an automated audit trail, a background demon script that Jemma had written eighteen months ago to monitor all high-level command authorizations across the syndicate’s private network. She had forgotten it was running in the vault’s auxiliary memory partition.
A single log entry, highlighted in harsh amber, caught the corner of her eye:
`TACTICAL DIRECTIVE LOG // SQUAD BRAVO` `DESTINATION: GOWANUS INDUSTRIAL PARK [ENZO VITUCCI]` `PAYLOAD TYPE: SPECIAL INCENDIARY / THERMITE BREACH CHARGES` `MISSION PARAMETER: S-7 [STERILIZATION]` `DISPATCH TIMESTAMP: 23:48:12` `AUTHORIZATION: GIORDANO-H-01`
Jemma’s breath hitched.
*Thermite breach charges?*
Squad Bravo hadn't been dispatched with ballistic shields and non-lethal entry tools to extract an elderly warehouse manager. Thermite wasn't an extraction asset—it was an incinerator. It was used to melt structural steel, destroy magnetic storage drives, and burn human remains into unidentifiable slag.
Her eyes darted up the log, scrolling backward through the buffer.
`TACTICAL DIRECTIVE LOG // SQUAD ALPHA` `DESTINATION: BELL BOULEVARD, BAYSIDE [MATTEO GIORDANO]` `MISSION PARAMETER: S-7 [STERILIZATION]` `EXECUTION OVERRIDE: ZERO RECOVERY` `AUTHORIZATION: GIORDANO-H-01`
A cold, bottomless sickness opened up inside her stomach.
*Mission Parameter: S-7.*
In the private tactical codes of the Giordano organization—the codes Hector had spent two years teaching her to recognize so she could flag unauthorized security incursions—*EX-01* was an emergency extraction.
*S-7* was an administrative erasure.
A liquidation.
“Hector…” Jemma whispered, the word barely a rasp in the smoky air.
Her fingers trembled violently as she attempted to pull her hands away from the keyboard, to push back her chair, to put distance between herself and the towering wall of muscle and bone standing behind her.
She didn't get the chance.
Hector’s hand on her neck tightened instantly—not choking her, but an immovable iron collar that held her skull perfectly still. His other arm came around her waist, an unyielding steel band that locked her torso back against his chest, pinning her against him so completely that she could feel every hard line of his tactical vest and the cold steel of his holstered Glock pressing against her shoulder blade.
“Don’t pull away, tesoro,” Hector whispered into her hair. His voice was devastatingly gentle, an intimate, tender murmur that clashed horrifyingly with the paralyzing strength of his grip. “Stay at the keys.”
“What… what is Parameter S-7?” she asked, tears of terror burning at the corners of her eyes as she stared at the amber text on the screen. “Hector, why does Nico’s mission log say sterilization? Why did Squad Bravo take thermite to Enzo’s warehouse?”
