Chapter 5
Matteo paused, reaching into his tuxedo jacket.
With a chilling, casual grace, he drew a matte-black Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster and laid it flat upon the altar beside the gold rings and the Bible.
The heavy metal clattered against the marble with a sickening finality.
"...you are welcome to pick up that gun and settle it with me on the stones."
The silence in the chapel was suffocating.
Vittorio Moretti’s jaw twitched. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, his knuckles turning white. He knew he had overplayed his hand. He didn't have the numbers yet; his coup wasn't ready to trigger. Backing down was his only option.
Vittorio bowed his head, a stiff, insincere jerk of his neck. "Forgive me, Don Matteo. The fortress belongs to you."
"Sit down, Vittorio," Matteo commanded coldly.
Vittorio retreated to his pew, his eyes burning with silent, murderous promise.
Matteo turned back to me.
His face was inches from mine. His eyes were blazing with a raw, electric fury, the adrenaline of absolute dominance rolling off him in waves. He looked at me not like a husband looks at a bride, but like a conqueror looking at the territory he had just claimed by the edge of a sword.
"You wanted to be spared the title, little bird?" he whispered, his fingers digging into the curve of my hip through the heavy silk. "Too bad. You belong to me now. Completely. And you will bear the full weight of my name whether you want it or not."
I let out a trembling, submissive breath, casting my eyes downward. "As you command, Matteo."
Beneath the veil, my lips twitched with the ghost of a smile.
*Checkmate, Vittorio.*
The priest’s hands were shaking so violently now that the pages of the missal rustled like dry leaves. He looked at Matteo with wide, pleading eyes.
"The... the Blood Sovereign Rite, Don Matteo?" the priest stammered. "If she is to receive the co-sovereignty..."
"The full rite," Matteo ordered, his voice unyielding. "Bring the chalice."
An altar boy, pale and trembling, scurried from the sacristy carrying a heavy antique silver chalice and a small, ceremonial obsidian dagger.
This was the ancient Falcone tradition—the rite dating back to the mountains of Sicily, modernly adapted by Matteo’s grandfather when the Bastion was built. To seal the co-sovereignty of the fortress, the Don and Donna had to perform the blood-binding.
In the modern fortress, that blood-binding wasn't just symbolic.
Embedded into the base of the altar was a flat, polished plate of black glass—the secondary biometric registration interface. To grant a new Donna the master security overrides, her blood had to be introduced to the system alongside the Don’s, authorizing the central mainframe to recognize her DNA profile as a sovereign user of the Bastion.
Matteo picked up the obsidian dagger.
He didn't hesitate. He dragged the razor-sharp volcanic glass across the meat of his left palm. Dark, crimson blood welled up immediately, dripping in heavy, rhythmic droplets into the silver chalice.
Then, he turned to me.
"Give me your hand, Sienna."
I looked at the blade, letting my eyes widen in staged horror. I pulled my hand back against my chest, shaking my head slightly.
"Matteo, please... is this necessary?" I whispered, my voice thick with faux dread. "We’ve already said the vows—"
"In this family, vows without blood are just breath," he said softly.
He didn't wait for permission. He reached forward, his large, scarred hand gently but inexorably catching my right fingers. He drew my hand toward him, turning my palm upward toward the vaulted ceiling.
His touch was warm, surprisingly tender despite the violence of his words. For a fraction of a second, as his calloused thumb brushed the sensitive skin of my wrist, a strange, unbidden shiver ran down my spine—not of fear, but of raw, electric tension.
He held the blade against my palm.
"Look at me, Sienna," he murmured, his dark eyes boring into mine. "Don't look at the steel. Look at me."
I held his gaze.
The edge of the obsidian sliced cleanly through my skin. A sharp sting flared across my palm, hot and immediate.
I didn't cry out. I bit my lower lip, letting out a sharp, ragged exhale through my teeth, my fingers curling instinctively against his.
Matteo’s gaze darkened with something intense, almost hungry. He held my bleeding palm over the silver chalice, watching as my crimson drops mingled with his own, swirling together in the shallow silver basin.
"Blood of the Marchesi," Matteo recited, the words ancient, rhythmic, rolling from his chest with the weight of an unshakeable oath. "Merged into the house of Falcone. One flesh. One blood. One rule."
He took the chalice and set it down.
Then, he took my bleeding hand, pressed his bleeding palm against mine, and slammed our intertwined hands directly onto the black glass plate embedded in the altar.
*Click-hum.*
A faint, high-frequency chime sounded beneath the stone. Beneath our joined palms, a ring of emerald light pulsed once through the glass, scanning the mingled blood, sampling the genetic markers, reading the biological handshake.
*Co-Sovereign DNA Profile: Marchesi, Sienna Maria.* *Status: Initialized.* *Secondary Authorizations: Granted.*
The confirmation light vanished back into the black glass before any of the capos in the pews could realize what had just occurred. To them, it was just an eccentric modern embellishment on an old Sicilian superstition.
To me, it was the keys to the kingdom.
Matteo pulled our hands away. The blood between our palms was slick, warm, binding us together like wet glue.
The priest stepped forward, his voice cracking with relief that the violence had been contained. "By the power vested in me... I now pronounce you husband and wife. Don and Donna. You may kiss the bride."
The chapel was dead quiet.
Matteo didn't hesitate. He reached out with his uninjured hand, his long fingers catching the delicate edge of my veil, and flipped it back over my head.
The cool air of the sanctuary washed over my bare face.
Matteo looked down at me. In the warm glow of the votives, his rugged, scarred features looked almost carved from marble. There was no mockery in his expression now. There was only a dark, heavy fascination, an intensity so absolute it felt like an invisible weight pressing against my chest.
He reached up, cupping the side of my face with his bloodied hand. A smear of our mingled blood traced across my cheekbone, warm and metallic.
"You're mine now, little bird," he whispered, his voice vibrating against my lips. "There is nowhere in this world you can fly that I will not drag you back from."
"I know," I breathed, looking straight into the black abyss of his eyes.
He leaned down and claimed my mouth.
It was not a gentle kiss. It was possessive, dark, and searing, the kiss of a conqueror sealing his claim on conquered land. His lips were firm, tasting of cedarwood, copper, and the dark communion wine. His arm wrapped around my waist with crushing strength, lifting me slightly off my heels, pulling me so hard against the broad wall of his chest that I could feel the violent, heavy thud of his heart through his tuxedo.
