Chapter 7

The Alpha's Rogue Healer

When he finally broke the kiss, his forehead rested against mine, both of us panting in the shadowed silence of the chamber.

His amber eyes were blown wide, flecks of pure gold swirling within the irises.

"Now," he rasped, his voice thick with raw, aching need, "do what you must with me, Rielle. My body is yours."

A deep, involuntary flush crept up my neck, warming my cheeks.

I swallowed hard, forcing my racing pulse to settle, calling upon the iron discipline that had kept me alive for twenty winters.

"Lie back," I ordered softly.

Merrick released his hold on my waist and leaned back against the mountain of furs, his breathing still heavy, his gaze locked on me with total, uninhibited submission.

I drew a long, centering breath and placed both of my palms flat against his bare chest, directly over the dark geometric knot.

"This will hurt," I warned him. "I have to force the silver resonance directly into the primary node. It will feel like liquid fire."

"Do it," he growled softly. "I have weathered worse."

I closed my eyes.

Deep within my spiritual core, my silver wolf rose to her feet, shaking out her luminous coat. I opened the sluice gates of my life-force, drawing up the rare, pearlescent energy that had made me an exile among common healers.

A brilliant, opalescent light began to bleed through the skin of my hands.

It wasn't the faint shimmer of yesterday. This was a concentrated, searing torrent of silver-white fire. The light illuminated the dark bedchamber, casting dancing, ethereal shadows across the timbered ceiling.

The moment the energy breached Merrick’s epidermis and hit the necrotic knot, his entire body locked.

The muscles of his abdomen turned to stone. The veins in his neck and shoulders bulged violently, and his hands gripped the fur blankets so hard the thick pelts tore with a sickening screech. A low, guttural snarl tore from his throat, his fangs lengthening, scraping against his lower lip.

"Hold steady," I urged him, leaning over him, pouring more of my soul's light directly into the black fracture lines. "Push through it, Merrick!"

Beneath my palms, a strange, miraculous phenomenon unfolded.

The moment my pure life-essence flooded the tissue, the writhing black tendrils didn't thrash with violence as they had the night before.

Instead, they seemed to shiver in ecstasy.

The sharp, hexagonal lattice of the necrosis softened. The geometric fractures, which had looked so rigid and deadly under the microscope, began to swell and stretch, drinking in the pearlescent luminescence pouring from my hands.

A deep, rhythmic vibration began to echo beneath his ribs. It wasn't the erratic, jagged thumping of a failing heart.

It was a smooth, submissive hum.

It felt almost like a purr—a deep, biological resonance that vibrated directly against the bones of my palms. To my senses, it felt as though the venom was yielding completely to my aura, pacified by the sheer, overwhelming purity of my life-force. The dark, oily purple undertones vanished, bleached into a dull, harmless charcoal gray by my silver fire.

Merrick let out a long, ragged groan, but the tension in his massive frame was changing.

The agonizing rigidity melted away. His fangs retracted, his head falling back against the furs as an expression of profound, intoxicating relief washed over his features.

"Gods..." he breathed, his voice slurred, thick with an overwhelming physical euphoria. "Rielle... what are you doing to me?"

"I'm flushing the node," I panted, sweat dripping from my brow, sizzled away by the radiant heat radiating between our bodies. "I'm saturating the foreign cells with silver-light. It's neutralizing the toxin's charge."

"It feels..." Merrick’s chest heaved, his hand coming up to gently rest over the back of mine, his thumb stroking my trembling wrist. "It feels like warmth. Like sunlight filling an empty cavern. My wolf... he’s completely quiet. He’s drinking it in."

A profound wave of professional triumph and emotional joy crashed through me.

*It's working,* I thought, tears of relief stinging my eyes as I watched the dark knot shrink beneath my palms, pulling tighter into itself, coiling into a tiny, dormant bead in the center of his chest. *The bio-weapon cannot survive my light.*

The tingling sensation beneath his skin intensified, radiating outward along his ribs in warm, pulsing waves.

To Merrick, it was the sensation of a shattered soul being pieced back together—the undeniable physical proof that his mate's rare, celestial gift was curing what all the ancient medicine of his ancestors could not touch.

His eyes, heavy with restorative exhaustion, looked up at me with an adoration so deep, so absolute, it made my soul ache.

"You're saving me," he whispered, his eyelids fluttering closed as the immense biological relief pulled him toward sleep. "Every night... give this to me every night, my sweet savior..."

"Every night," I promised softly, my voice trembling with exhaustion as I finally cut off the flow of light.

I collapsed forward, resting my forehead against his warm, broad chest, listening to the strong, steady, miraculous rhythm of his heartbeat.

*Thump. Thump. Thump.*

Beneath my fingertips, nestled deep within the muscle of his myocardium, the tiny charcoal knot rested in total stillness.

Yet as my consciousness drifted on the edge of exhaustion, a faint, phantom sensation brushed against my diagnostic senses—a microscopic tremor, so faint and rhythmic it felt almost like a second, deeper pulse nestling into the marrow of his chest. I held my breath, listening, but the feeling faded back into the steady, reassuring thrum of his heartbeat.

*Just the tissue settling,* I told myself, letting my heavy eyes close against the steady warmth of his skin. *Just the venom submitting to the light.*

Cradled in the quiet dark of the Alpha's chamber, wrapped in his heat and the lingering glow of our bond, I let the silence claim us—entirely certain that with enough nights, enough silver-fire poured from my own soul, I would burn away the very last trace of the assassin's curse and make my mate whole.

The Blood Moon was three nights away, and the fortress of Onyx Ridge smelled of fresh pine, wet iron, and mounting dread.

In the Great Hall, under the soaring obsidian rafters, Alpha Merrick stood before the assembled pack. Four thousand wolves—from battle-hardened border wardens to tavern keepers and nursing mothers—crowded the slate floor, their collective breathing filling the vaulted cavern like the rumble of a subterranean tide.

Merrick wore the ceremonial mantle of the Black Direwolf. The heavy, silver-tipped pelt draped across his massive shoulders, but his chest remained bare, displaying the pale, branching scars where the shadow-rot had tried and failed to claim his heart.

I stood beside him, draped in a simple tunic of dark midnight wool, my apothecary satchel resting against my hip.

Elder Donald stood at the foot of the dais, flanked by seven council elders whose faces were carved from sour resentment.

"The Blood Moon is the sacred hour of the pack run," Donald's voice echoed through the silence, thin and reedy against the towering granite. "For eight generations, the Alpha has taken a bride of pure Onyx blood to sanctify the territorial wards. To run with an unverified rogue... a nameless stray whose lineage is scrubbed from the ancestral tablets... it invites the wrath of the Moon Mother."
