Chapter 9

Rejected by the Heir, Bound to the Exile

Jaxon stared at Bowen's straight stance, his brow furrowing for a split second before a bark of dismissive laughter tore from his throat.

"Well, well," Jaxon mocked, pacing forward two steps, resting the shaft of his silver halberd against the crusted snow. "Look at the miracle! The little wolfless bride played nursemaid to the broken stray! You can stand on your own two feet now, cur? How touching."

The enforcers chuckled, a chorus of guttural, confident barks echoing through the clearing.

Freya ignored the warriors, her amber gaze fixing squarely on Jaxon.

"You bring thirty blades to a border cabin on the eve of the Blood Moon, Jaxon," she said, her voice clear, melodic, and carrying effortlessly across the frozen glade. "Have the mighty warriors of Eldenridge become so terrified of an exile and a girl without a wolf?"

Jaxon’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly, twitching scowl.

"Hold your sharp tongue," Jaxon snapped, reaching into his tunic with his left hand and producing the ancient, red-scribed parchment. He unfurled it with a flick of his wrist. "You know why I'm here. Your mother hid the pack's land-deed in her bloodline. You are going to sign this parchment with your living blood, renewing Eldenridge's boundary wards for another seventy winters."

"And if I refuse?" Freya asked coolly.

Jaxon took a heavy step forward, the steel plates on his boots clanking against the rock.

"You don't have the luxury of refusal," he sneered, his eyes raking over her with arrogant disdain. "Sign the deed, Freya. Crawl down off that porch, kneel at my feet, and sign. Do that, and I might allow you to return to the Great Hall under my mercy. You won't sit on the Luna's throne, but at least you'll have shelter."

"And Bowen?" Freya asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy quiet.

Jaxon looked past her, fixing his gaze on the silent, broad-shouldered man standing beside her. A venomous, arrogant grin spread across the heir's face.

"The stray dies," Jaxon said simply. "Right here. On this porch. We are going to strike him down, crush whatever strength he has left, and leave him cold in the drifts while you watch. A crippled cur who dared lay his filthy hands on the Alpha's former betrothed does not get to breathe our air."

The thirty enforcers drew their weapons in unison. The metallic rasp of steel and silver unsheathing filled the freezing clearing, sending a ripple of hostile intent through the pines.

Freya didn't flinch. She didn't blink.

"The land of Eldenridge was never yours to claim, Jaxon," Freya said, her voice dropping into an ancient, terrifying cadence that made the lead enforcers shift uncomfortably on their boots. "My ancestors granted the valley as a sanctuary for the weak. Your father turned it into a den of cowards, thieves, and oppressors. You broke the sacred hearth-oath when you cast me out. You severed the red cord before the altar."

She took one slow, deliberate step down from the wooden porch, her boots sinking softly into the crimson-lit snow.

"I will not sign your deed," Freya declared, her eyes burning with an unearthly, silver light. "And you will not touch a single hair on Bowen's head."

Jaxon’s face flushed with humiliated rage.

"Strike the stray down!" Jaxon shouted, pointing his halberd directly at Bowen. "Break his guard! Take him out!"

Six elite enforcers lunged forward, their silver-edged blades flashing beneath the Blood Moon.

Before their boots could cross the yard, Bowen moved.

It was not the desperate scramble of an invalid. It was a blur of devastating, impossible velocity.

Bowen closed the ten-pace gap in the time it took an enforcer to draw breath. He did not draw a sword. His bare right hand shot forward like an iron piston, seizing the lead warrior by his heavy armor collar with staggering force. With effortless momentum, Bowen drove the warrior back and hurled the two-hundred-pound brute sideways into two advancing flankers, sending all three crashing into the frozen boulders, knocked senseless before their bodies settled in the snow.

The remaining three attackers froze, their yellow shifter eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated shock.

Bowen stood in the center of the yard, his posture completely erect, towering over the clearing like a mountain of black basalt. He slowly rolled his massive shoulders, the simple woolen shirt straining against his powerful frame.

The air around him began to warp. The ambient temperature, already far below zero, plummeted so violently that the falling snow froze into solid glass pellets before touching the ground.

"You were warned," Bowen said.

His voice didn't just carry—it reverberated through the earth beneath their boots, shaking the foundations of the cabin, vibrating through the teeth of thirty seasoned warriors.

Jaxon stumbled back half a step, shocked by the sheer physical power of the display, before his wounded pride overtook his survival instincts.

"Form ranks!" Jaxon bellowed, swinging his silver-tipped halberd into a high, two-handed guard. "Surround him! Disarm him! He’s just one solitary rogue! He can't stop thirty blades!"

The remaining twenty-seven warriors tightened the perimeter, their shields locking into a bristling wall of silver pikes and broadswords, slowly closing the circle around the porch.

Bowen stepped smoothly back onto the bottom step of the porch, placing his massive body entirely between Freya and the ring of silver steel. His broad back formed an impenetrable wall, shielding her completely from the flashing blades.

"Freya," Bowen murmured, his voice calm, velvet-soft, and utterly intimate amidst the sea of bared weapons.

"I am here," she answered.

Freya stepped directly behind him. She did not cower. She reached out with both hands, placing her bare palms flat against the center of Bowen’s back—right over the focal point where his royal dampening glamour was anchored to his spine.

The celestial clock ran out.

Above them, the moon crossed the absolute center of the mountain crags. The Blood Moon reached its total eclipse. The pale silver sphere turned into an eye of pure, suffocating crimson fire.

A resonant, seismic chime echoed in Freya's chest.

The ancient lunar seal—the five-fold primordial lock that had bound her spirit for eighteen years—shattered like thin glass under an imperial hammer. A roaring torrent of liquid starlight flooded her veins, burning through her mortal channels with the blinding, absolute majesty of the Primordial Fenrir.

Simultaneously, her bare hands channeled that boundless, ancient lunar current straight into the suppression brand on Bowen’s back.

The silver-burned runes holding his sovereign aura melted away in an instant.

Jaxon, blinded by his own frantic desperation to assert dominance, saw only an opening. He broke from the rank of his enforcers, his face twisted into an arrogant, desperate sneer.

He raised his silver-tipped halberd high above his head, the heavy blade gleaming beneath the blood-red sky, aiming a decisive, downward cleave directly at Bowen.

"Watch him fall, Freya!" Jaxon roared, spit flying from his bared teeth as he swung the halberd downward with all the momentum of his body. "You will watch your broken pet be struck down before crawling back to the altar on your knees!"

At that precise breath, as the silver blade plummeted toward Bowen's flesh—

Bowen’s damaged left eye and dark slate right eye ignited simultaneously into blinding, sovereign violet fire.

A shockwave of pure imperial gravity detonated from his core, tearing the snow clean off the earth in a hundred-yard ring.

At the very same fraction of a second, Freya’s skin erupted with incandescent, iridescent Silver Fenrir runes. The primordial light blazed through her tunic, blinding the entire war-party with an aura of raw lunar dread as the granite boulders surrounding the cabin shattered into powder beneath the sheer pressure of her awakening.

The halberd stopped dead.

Suspended in mid-strike, Jaxon hung frozen in the air—his blade suspended six inches above the neck of an emperor, staring into the blazing, unmasked eyes of two primordial apex predators waking at once.
