Chapter 11

A Treaty Written in Lies

She pulled back just far enough to look straight into his burning, golden eyes, her lips curved into a triumphant, merciless smirk.

She had won.

She had read every secret, exposed every ambush, and dismantled his entire tactical defense from the inside out. He was at her mercy. The invincible Alpha was stripped bare before the rogue who held his mind in the palm of her hand.

For three agonizing seconds, the silence inside the pavilion was absolute.

Ozias did not draw a breath.

Then, slowly... the ragged, frantic heaving of his broad chest stopped.

Not gradually. Not with the shaking relief of a man who had just been saved from the gallows.

It simply ceased.

His breathing shifted into a slow, terrifyingly steady rhythm—deep, rhythmic, and cold as mountain granite. The wild, unhinged gold in his eyes receded, clearing away like morning fog to reveal pupils as sharp, lucid, and intensely focused as twin obsidian blades.

The veins along his neck smoothed flat. The frantic tension that had made his shoulders tremble vanished into thin air, replaced by an aura of supreme, terrifying sovereignty that made the hair on the back of Audra’s arms stand completely on end.

A chill, colder than the blizzard howling against the canvas roof, slithered down Audra’s spine.

Ozias didn't reach for the pen.

He didn't look at the treaty.

He slowly, deliberately tilted his head, letting his gaze wash over her face with an expression of dark, amused satisfaction. The corner of his mouth curved upward—not into the desperate, yearning smile she had seen in the strategic recess, but into a slow, predatory grin that made her blood turn to solid ice.

A soft, low chuckle rumbled in the cavern of his broad chest—a sound so rich, so completely relaxed, and so profoundly chilling that Audra took an involuntary half-step backward.

Ozias leaned down, his amber eyes glittering in the firelight with terrible, leisurely triumph.

“Tell me, little bird...” he murmured, his voice smooth as silk and cold as a winter grave. “Did you really think an Alpha’s mind was ever so easy to breach?”
